I have had fine hair all of my life and have tried many different techniques and products. Through this trial and error I have found four main brands of Shampoo and Conditioners to switch to. In my experience when I stick to one brand/type of shampoo for too long it builds up in my hair and weighs it down. That is the last thing fine hair needs is to be weighed down! The best brands are Bed Head volumizing shampoo and conditioner, Aussie volume, Herbal Essences volume and Pantene's new lifting shampoo and conditioner. I currently have all in my home and switch weekly sometimes daily depending on how I feel my hair has been working for me when styling each day. What I have also realized is that the 2 in 1 shampoo/conditioner combos DO NOT WORK FOR FINE HAIR! Keep them separate and only use your conditioner at the ends of your hair to help with over drying and split ends. This will keep the weight and build up off of your roots. There are enough natural oils from your scalp that get in touch with your hair directly on top of your head.
Blowdrying techniques
One of the very first things I learned about hair from my mom was to blow dry my hair upside down. Now I don't mean hang yourself by your feet and dry your hair, but bend over and aim your blow dryer at your roots. This will give your roots great lift. However if you have bangs you will want to dry them in the direction you want them to go first and then do dry the rest of your hair upside down. Once you are finished you may style as usual. Another technique is to get a large roll brush and begin at the roots and lift the hair in sections away from the scalp aiming the blow dryer at roots and then along hair as you pull the brush through. You can do this in sections to pay special attention equally to all parts of your hair. This method can give a great rounded, volumized look.
Hair products for fine hair
Two of my favorite most needed products that I use on a daily basis to give my hair the most lift possible are Hairspray from either Aussie or Herbal Essences and the Regis Flexible Finisher!! I love regis salon products and when I was introduced to this Flexible Finisher a few months ago I absolutely fell in love. I can no longer go out of the house without a few spritzes of this great product. I begin by using it just after blow drying my hair. I again tip my head over and spray at roots and ends. Then when bringing head back up my hair looks a bit silly at first because it is "super" voluminous! But you can quickly sculpt your locks into the frame you want and add any necessary touches of spray at the ends and by lifting roots with your fingers and giving a quick spray. Once you have your hair in the appropriate part, hair accessory etc. The add on a few quick spritz of hairspray and you are done! The best part is as your day goes on and you feel like your hair is flattening, when you go in the bathroom you can tip your head over and tousle and it will rejuvenate those locks again! You can also opt to refresh with a few "touch up sprays" for your evening adventures and still look as if you had just washed and styled fresh hair. I absolutely recommend this product to anyone with fine hair looking for a much needed lift. I must admit this will work best with shorter hair, the longer the hair the harder it would be for this to work on the entire length of hair. Although it can still give your roots a good boost.
No matter what regimen you choose, there is a perfect cut, style and product out there for you!
